Weymouth Ferries & Boat Trips

Along with Poole on the Dorset Coast, Weymouth has a ferry terminal in the town with services to Jersey and Guernsey in the Channel Islands as well as St Malo in France. The terminal is easily accessible from the A354 and is located at the southern end of The Esplanade. If you're looking for a family holiday on the Dorset Coast with the option to explore further afield Weymouth fits the bill perfectly.

Weymouth is also a good place to pick up a boat trip - whether it's a white knuckle speedboat ride over the waves or a more leisurely cruise around The Fleet you'll find something to suit all tastes from Weymouth.

Weymouth Channel Island Ferries

Weymouth is one of the main stepping off points for the Channel Islands. Condor Ferries run regular services to Jersey and Guernsey. You can either book as a foot passenger or take your car with you. The service is a fast ferry service that operates out of Weymouth all year round. Crossings to Guernsey take just over two hours, crossings to Jersey take just over three and a half hours.

You can just about make a trip to the Channel Islands in a day trip but check the timetables carefully (available on the weblink right) to make sure the day you want to go gives you the most time on the islands. It is also worth checking out their Special Offers as you can pick up some cheaper fares for day trips, midweek breaks and other offers during the year.

Don't forget, if you're taking your own vehicle over or hiring one on Jersey or Guernsey, driving is on the left. The maximum speed limit is 40 miles per hour on Jersey and 35 miles per hour on Guernsey; lower speed limits apply in built up areas. You must also have your certificate of insurance or an International Green Card and valid driving licence. You'll also need to display a nationality plate on your vehicle.

There are also a range of ferry services from Poole to Jersey, Guernsey and St Malo. Flights from Bournemouth Airport are also available. Check our Bournemouth Airport page, link right.

Weymouth Cross-Channel Ferries

Condor Ferries also run a cross-channel ferry service to St Malo in France.

There are around seven crossings weekly and the journey from Weymouth to St Malo on the Brittany Coast take five and a quarter hours.

Condor Ferries offer a range of short break offers or discounts for group travel. Check their website, link right, for the latest offers.

Boat Trips from Weymouth

Just west of Weymouth is Chesil Beach and The Fleet lagoons nature reserve. The Isle of Portland lies south of Weymouth and all along the coast either side of Weymouth is, of course, the Jurassic geology and fossil rich rocks that form spectacular shapes.

No wonder boat trips are popular from Weymouth. A range of operators offer leisurely boat trips to take in the views such as Pulpit Rock and the Isle of Portland and Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove; while others offer adrenaline rides along the coast. For disabled groups the MV Freedom is a specially designed boat with wheelchair access run by volunteers that can be booked for trips along the Dorset coast. See their link right for more information.

There is also a glass-bottomed boat that will take you across The Fleet lagoons behind Chesil Beach giving you a glimpse of the underwater marine wildlife you're unlikely to see in any other way. If you'd rather explore under your own steam you can take a kayak tour of the coast. Check the links right for more information.

The historic Waverley paddle steamer and Balmoral also run boat trips from Weymouth during the summer season. There are either cruises to the well-known Dorset coast sights or further afield to destinations such as Bournemouth along the coast, or Cowes or Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. Check the links right for up-to-date listings.
