Weymouth Tourist Information Dorset

Weymouth is a traditional seaside resort that has moved with the times to offer modern British seaside family holidays. Weymouth became a fashionable summer holiday destination after King George III holidayed here several times between 1789 and 1805. Since then the town has developed through the centuries which you can see in the Georgian seafront that overlooks Weymouth Bay.

Much of the Georgian seafront terraces were commissioned by wealthy businessmen, some of whom had been instrumental in the growth of Bath in Somerset. The seafront is where you'll find a whole host of hotels, bed and breakfast and guest house accommodation, and cafes.

The beach is the centre of all the family entertainment including donkey rides, fairground rides, games and ice cream kiosks and snack huts along The Esplanade. At the southern end of The Esplanade is Weymouth's Pavilion Theatre. Acts from all over the country perform here including comedy and musical theatre shows and there is an annual summer season show and pantomime at Christmas. Check the links right for up-to-date information. There are plans for the theatre to be refurbished and the Weymouth & Portland Council link to the theatre has regular updates.

Weymouth's Tourist Information Centre is on the Esplanade which is handy for the beach and has further information on current events. It is open throughout the year at the following times: Easter to October: 9.30am-5pm daily. November to Easter: 10am-4pm daily. Closed Christmas day, Boxing day and New Year's day. Weymouth Family Holidays Weymouth Beach

Weymouth is an excellent summer family holiday destination. The fine sandy beach that runs in an arc alongside the Esplanade is an excellent family-friendly beach. You'll find plenty of traditional entertainment in the form of donkey rides and Punch and Judy shows as well as fun activities like trampolines, crazy golf and pedaloes to keep the family occupied. You can also hire deckchairs or sunbeds along the beach.

For another leisurely way to catch the views of Weymouth Bay try the Seafront Land Train - a miniature train that's great for all the family and includes facilities for wheelchairs. It runs from the Tourist Information Centre between Easter and end of September.

Weymouth is also famous for its sand models that are made from the fine sand, some of which are coloured up and feature famous cartoon characters and animals. You can view them from The Esplanade. The beach also plays host to a range of events throughout the year including volleyball competitions, firework displays, motocross and kite festivals.

During the summer the beach is supervised by lifeguards and there is also a first aid post and lost children centre. There are several ramp access points to Weymouth Beach and there is also a beach wheelchair available for loan from the Control Centre on tel: 01305 838511.

Weymouth Watersports and Activities

Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour, south of Weymouth - the deepest man-made harbour in the country - are great for all sorts of watersports. Sailing is hugely popular as is kitesurfing, windsurfing, water skiing and diving. Weymouth Bay has specifically designated areas for watersports so bathers can splash around in the sea without being disturbed.

Portland Harbour is regulated by the Portland Harbour Authority. Check the PHA link right for more information on using the Harbour for leisure. There is a downloadable leaflet showing designated areas for leisure craft. In fact Portland Harbour is the venue for the 2012 Olympic Sailing Trials. Overcombe Corner, east along Weymouth Beach, and Portland Harbour are the most popular locations for watersports.

If you haven't had a go at watersports before you'll find plenty of places where you can organise tuition or trips as well as pick up equipment or accessories. A popular guided trip is by kayak or power boat along the Jurassic Coast. Check the links right for more information on training, charters and activities.

Shore angling and sea fishing are both popular from Weymouth. You can bring your own boats to launch at several places around Weymouth or pick up one of the many sea fishing trips available from Weymouth Bay. Shore fishing is popular particularly at the lagoons behind Chesil Beach.

Weymouth Sea Life Park & Lodmoor Country Park Birdwatching Holidays

If you carry on north east from the Weymouth's seafront you'll come to Lodmoor Country Park, a 350 acre site that includes one of the RSPB Reserves in Weymouth. Lodmoor RSPB Reserve contains open water, reedbed, saltmarsh and wet grassland that is excellent for a range of birds including rarities like Cetti's warbler, bearded tits, bittern, as well as hundreds of swallows, martins and waders.

In addition to the country park there are several family attractions here including the Weymouth Sea Life Park, Pirate Adventure mini-golf, a miniature railway and a skatepark.

Weymouth Sea Life Park is a park and marine sanctuary. There is a mix of both indoor and outdoor attractions that are home to seahorses, starfish, seals, otters and penguins. The youngsters can also have a go on Adventure Island or the Splash Lagoon with its water slide, splash pool and waterjets! Check the link right for more information.
