Ringwood, nearby, has always been known for its fine ales. Records have been found, of the celebrations following the defeat of James Duke of Monmouth's rebellion in 1685 - the Duke was captured in a ditch in nearby Horton - note: "Ringwood ale flowed merrily and long". The St Leonards Hotel must be one of the few bars in Britain where the pillars are inscribed with the illustrious names of many and few who flew from wartime airfields dotted around the New Forest and the South Coast.
